Catherine Brinkman has a passion for making things better, be it the California public educational system, safeguarding the environment, or working to get more high-tech jobs back onto the Peninsula. Like most Americans she wants to leave the world a better place for the future.
A native to the 19th District, spending her early childhood in El Granada before her family moved to Foster City, Catherine has decided to run for Assembly as a way to continue the long family tradition of public service. Her father is a Deputy Probation Officer, in San Mateo County and her mother recently retired after a 40 year nursing career, 27 years working in the 19th district. Catherine attended San Mateo High School and was one of the first students to graduate from the ROP Biotechnology program that San Mateo offered. She spent five years in Los Angeles, where she earned a BA in History and a minor in Urban Planning from UCLA.
While at UCLA she served as business manager of one of the student's newspapers. Catherine was the youngest business manager in UCLA's history and also served on the Academic Senate. She has also volunteered within the community, with children at the Star Foundation at UCLA Medical Center, tutored at risk students, served on the Whale Days committee in Malibu. She also was involved with LA Works, a regional volunteer organization that helps the homeless. As a senior at UCLA, Catherine interned with Christie's International Los Angeles in their PR department.
Upon graduating she worked in Los Angeles as a licensed Series 3 commodities broker, but after experiencing the tragedy of Sept. 11, she returned to the 19th District to get involved in politics. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the California Republican League, a mainstream political non-profit group that works to get more pro-choice, environmentally conscious republicans, like herself, elected to office at all levels in the California. In the spring of 2002, she founded the CRL-Associated Students, a group that works to get more moderate Republican college students involved in politics in their district, and in Sacramento through internships. Catherine has started an online newspaper and organized many political events.
Catherine has volunteered on numerous political campaigns including gubernatorial candidate Richard Riordan's primary in 2002, Lieutenant Governor Candidate Bruce McPherson, and Congressional Candidate Beth Rogers. Catherine was very involved in Governor Schwarzenegger's campaign in October. She was instrumental in getting voters, Republicans and Democrats alike, involved in his campaign on a grassroots level.
In 2003, Catherine served as Campaign Manager to the first woman, in the state's history, elected to the position of California Republican Party Associate Representative. She was appointed to be the California Young Republicans (CYR) National Committeewoman for 2004 and also serves on the CYR Silicon Valley board. Most recently she as selected to represent California this summer in New York at the Republican National Convention. She has also volunteered with the Coyote Point Environmental Museum, the San Mateo-Clara Alliance, and the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church League for Service-Thrift Shop. Catherine is also an active member of Oceana, The Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood as well as the Wish List.
While looking forward to the day when Bart is extended from Millbrae through the rest of the Peninsula to San Jose, Catherine realizes that the state is facing a monumental fiscal crisis and that we must prioritize and focus on making pre-exiting public transportation even more efficient. Catherine also agrees with President Bush's view on immigration, granting work Visas to those undocumented residents that can show that they are currently employed.
As Assemblywoman to the 19th District, Catherine promises to bring the integrity, honestly and hard work that she has developed to her constituents. She will always work to protect a women's choice, improve the public school curriculum to help students reach their full potential, work to get small high-tech firms back into the Peninsula, especially biotechnology and computer firms. She will work to preserve the coastline and San Mateo watershed for all to enjoy. Catherine asks for the support of all members of the 19th District as she begins to put the service back in public service.
