| Info | Delbert and Mary Jean Stone raised their grandaughter Marlys in the small town of White City, Kansas. This farming community left her with a solid appreciation of the needs and contributions of rural Kansans. Delbert & Mary Jean also exposed her to solid American values. They were Depression-era survivors who valued hard work, honesty, and civic duty. Delbert fought with the First Marine Division during WWII and lost his right arm during the Battle of Okinawa.
The family was deeply spiritual and active in their local Baptist Church. They believed in helping neighbors and those in need. Marlys has carried these values with her throughout her professional and personal life.
Her grandparents also championed the value of a strong education. Marlys followed in her grandfather’s footsteps and attended the University of Kansas. She graduated in 1992 with a degree in Sociology and Crime & Delinquency. At KU she met fellow student Brian Shulda. They married in 1996 and have been proud Shawnee residents for more than 20 years.
Marlys and Brian are committed to their two children, Marah, 11, and Brody, 7. The family enjoys camping, hiking, and travelling together. Marlys hopes she can teach her children the same values and ethics as well as her grandparents taught her.
Like many families, the Shuldas worked hard to juggle a young, growing family and busy careers. In 2007, Marlys chose to leave Community Corrections to stay home with her children, as Brian’s work required extensive travel. She remains busy, however, and continues to facilitate the Changing Lives Through Literature group when asked.
Marlys actively volunteers at Horizon Elementary School, coaches Marah’s volleyball team, and was one of Horizon’s first Girls on the Run coaches this past spring.
