On January 4, 2005 Congresswoman Melissa Bean was sworn into her first term as U.S. Representative for Illinois’ Eighth District, after defeating the longest-serving Member of the majority party.
Rep. Bean brings her over-20-year business and entrepreneurial background combined with a deep commitment to her community as a wife and mother, to her role representing the families in Lake, McHenry and Northwestern Cook Counties.
From 1995 to 2004, Rep. Bean, who is 44 years old, was president of a consulting firm serving high-tech Fortune 1000 clients internationally. Before founding Sales Resources Inc. in 1995, Melissa helped build revenues in management positions at area technology companies including, Arrow Electronics, Motorola, SynOptics (now Nortel) and Dataflex.
Rep. Bean has taken her practical business background to Congress, where she is working to hold corporate and Congressional leaders to a greater level of fiscal accountability. That management experience has helped her in Washington’s partisan political atmosphere, where she is working to find common-sense solutions to the complex problems facing our nation.
She has provided the visible and active representation she promised as a candidate, reaching out to the community with several forums, town hall meetings and other public events while providing the responsive constituent service the district had been lacking.
Rep. Bean has also been working hard to address the concerns of district families by supporting policies that represent their fiscally conservative and socially moderate views. She has also introduced her own legislation, including a bill that encourages adoption of older children and another to provide tax incentives for improving home energy efficiency. Rep. Bean has consistently supported efforts to improve homeland security and to protect our troops, traveling to Iraq last year to meet with soldiers and American and Iraqi military leaders.
As a member of the Financial Services Committee, she is one of the leaders in the fight against Identity Theft, introducing legislation that requires companies to better protect people’s personal financial information and notify them if it has been compromised. Rep. Bean also serves on the House Small Business Committee, where she has fought for lower fees on federal small business loans and to improve support for Small Business Development Centers that help smaller companies expand and create jobs.
Rep. Bean, the oldest of four, was born in Chicago and grew up in Park Ridge where she graduated from Maine East High School. Bean earned her BA in Political Science from Roosevelt University.
Melissa and her husband Alan have been married for 21 years. They have lived in Barrington for 18 years where their daughters, Victoria and Michelle, attend District 220 schools.
