(CBS 2) A Congresswoman in Illinois has a bold plan to protect airline passengers. She wants to prevent shoulder-fired missiles from taking down planes.

Melissa Bean is a freshman lawmaker from the suburbs. She's proposing that the government spend $5 billion to equip every commercial jet in the country with high-tech devices to stop a missile. CBS 2 chief correspondent Jay Levine reports on the plan targeting terrorists who could be taking dead aim at your next flight.

Shoulder-fired missiles are the most popular weapons of terrorists. They’re cheap, easy to use and easy to find.

Representative Steven Israel (D-NY) said, “The US State Department said this piece of equipment is the leading cause of loss of life in commercial aviation around the world.”

Israel and north suburban Congresswoman Melissa Bean want Congress to pass a bill requiring missile defense systems on all commercial airliners -- something which might not have been possible before 9/11, but is well within our reach today.

Jack Pledger of Northrop Grumman said, “We developed the system right here in Rolling Meadows. We put it on military aircraft, tested it with live-fire exercises and showed that it works.”

Bean said, “We are saving lives every day in Iraq and Afghanistan with this technology, now is the time to aggressively move forward to address this threat at home.”
