Born in Alma, Georgia in 1951, Don Smart is a native Georgian who grew up on a farm in Appling County, GA. He attended public schools and graduated from Appling County High School in Baxley , GA in 1968. Don's parents were farmers and he has relatives in Appling , Bacon, Long, Pierce, Wayne and other counties in southeast Georgia. His mother still lives on the family farm in southern Appling County.
Don attended West Georgia College where in his senior year he served as Student Body President. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from West Georgia College, a law degree from Emory University, and an MBA from Duke University.
Smart served in the U.S. Marine Corps on active duty from 1975 to 1979 as a judge advocate. His tour included a year in Japan and two years in North Carolina. After active duty Don entered the Marine Corps Reserve where he served in various billets including logistics officer, shore party officer, and as the Commanding Officer of the Savannah Marine Corps Reserve Unit from 1983 to 1986 upon its reactivation. Don retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1999 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Smart is an attorney who has been active in the Savannah community. He was formerly a member of the Jesup Jaycees and the Savannah Jaycees. On two different occasions he has served as President of the Kiwanis Club of Savannah. He currently serves on the board of the Coastal Jazz Association and the board of Region 13 of the MHMRSA (Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Substance Abuse) of the State of Georgia. He is a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Savannah.
