Info | BELL, Samuel Newell, (grandson of Samuel Bell and nephew of James Bell), a Representative from New Hampshire; born in Chester, Rockingham County, N.H., March 25, 1829; attended school in Francestown, N.H., and Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.; was graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., in 1847; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced practice in Meredith, Belknap County, N.H.; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1873); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1872 to the Forty-third Congress; elected to the Forty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1877); was not a candidate for reelection in 1876; resumed the practice of law in Meredith; also interested in large real estate holdings; served as president of several railroads and vice president of the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Co.; appointed chief justice of the superior court of New Hampshire, but declined to accept; retired from public life; died while on a visit in North Woodstock, N.H., February 8, 1889; interment in the Valley Cemetery, Manchester, N.H.
