| Info | RUTHERFURD, John, a Senator from New Jersey; born in New York City on September 20, 1760; graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1779; studied law; admitted to the bar and commenced practice in New York City in 1784; moved to a farm near Allamuchy, Warren County, N.J., in 1787; presidential elector in 1788; member, State general assembly 1788-1789; elected in 1790 to the United States Senate; reelected in 1796 and served from March 4, 1791, to December 5, 1798, when he resigned; president of the Board of Proprietors of East Jersey 1804-1840; appointed by the New York legislature as commissioner to lay out the city of New York north of Fourteenth Street 1807-1811; moved to a large farm on the banks of the Passaic River in 1808, which he called “Edgerston”; appointed by the New Jersey legislature as commissioner to determine the route and cost of a canal to connect the Delaware and Raritan Rivers in 1816; served as a commissioner to determine the boundary lines between the States of New Jersey and New York and New Jersey and Pennsylvania 1826-1833; died at his home, ‘Edgerston,’ New Jersey, February 23, 1840; interment in the family vault in the burying ground of Christ Church, Belleville, Essex County, N.J.
