Info | Alexandria A. "Alex" Coronado
Orange County Board of Education Member & Businesswoman
Dr. Alexandria Coronado's family has served Orange County for over 20 years. In 1998, that tradition of public service, along with her concern for education, prompted Dr. Coronado to run for a seat on the Anaheim Union High School District Board of Trustees. She was the first Hispanic woman elected to the Board in the 100-year history of that school district.
Dr. Coronado earned a Doctorate in Music Education from the University of Southern California. During her degree program, Alexandria learned about the benefits of education as well as the challenges currently facing it. Dr. Coronado has applied her knowledge of educational issues to her practical duties as a school board member.
Dr. Coronado's doctoral research was recently presented at the California School Boards Association Conference in partnership with the Orange County Performing Arts Center and the Orange County Department of Education. Her research helped provide the necessary statistics needed to obtain funding for Summer At The Center, a program for at-risk youth, which has been recognized as an outstanding program by the United States Department of Education.
As a small business owner, Dr. Coronado understands the importance of educating our children in the basics: reading, writing, and arithmetic. She is a firm believer that these skills will continue to keep the American spirit alive and its economy vibrant.
The proud mother of a twelve-year old daughter in our public schools, Dr. Coronado understands the issues facing education from a parent's point of view. She is a firm believer in parental rights -- parents should have the final say in their children's education, not bureaucrats.
As a member of the Orange County Board of Education, Dr. Coronado helped conceive and implement a parental rights handbook, so that parents can and will be informed of their legal rights within school districts throughout Orange County. She has continued to promote a back-to-basics curriculum for Orange County's students, the Newcomer Program for immigrant children, as well as various arts programs.
Dr. Coronado is currently the President of the California School Boards Leadership Council, a member of the Board of Directors for the Orange County School Boards Association, and is frequently invited to speak as a panelist, lecturer, and guest on radio and television shows dealing with education issues. In addition, the press relies on her as an expert source regarding education matters.
Dr. Coronado works tirelessly so that Orange County's students will have the best possible education. She is pleased to serve as a member of the Orange County Board of Education, and is currently a candidate for the United States Congress in the 47th Congressional District.
