Alex Sanders was born, raised, and educated in South Carolina. After serving in the U.S. Army, he earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of South Carolina and later a Masters Degree in the judicial process from the University of Virginia School of Law.

A lifelong advocate for public education, as a legislator Alex Sanders championed education reform and fought to increase pay for public school teachers. As President of the College of Charleston, he raised academic standards and increased the endowment by more than 290 percent.

A former serviceman in the United States Army, Alex Sanders understands that national security issues must be at the top of our nation's priorities.

Alex Sanders says that husband and father have been his most important jobs in life. Alex Sanders and his wife, Zoe, met as four-year-olds in kindergarten and have been married for 37 years. Zoe wrote a successful cookbook, Entertaining at the College of Charleston, to raise money for student scholarships at the College of Charleston. Their daughter, Zoe Caroline and her husband, Bill Nettles, practice law in Columbia.
