New York's oldest third party, founded by labor leaders Alex Rose and David Dubinsky, helped elect Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy president, Hugh Carey and Mario Cuomo governor and Fiorello LaGuardia and Rudolph Giuliani mayor. In the fall, the party's nominee for governor, Andrew Cuomo, quit two months before the general election, and his name failed to get the 50,000 votes necessary for the party to retain its automatic place on the ballot.
