DescriptionTALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Scott Maddox entered the governor's race Monday, nine days after stepping down as the Florida Democratic Party chairman.

Maddox, 37, served as Tallahassee mayor before taking over the party two years ago. His paperwork was filed Monday with the Division of Elections by a group of city officials from around the state.

``I spent a decade in local government as mayor in the city of Tallahassee. Unlike the other candidates running, I was responsible for a half-billion dollar budget and over 2,800 employees. I helped run a police department, a fire department, an electric utility and an airport, among other things,'' Maddox said.

Filing his campaign papers were Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson, Waldo Mayor Louie David and Lynn Haven Mayor Walt Kelly.

``He's been a shining star in local government and we think he'll bring that same energy to Florida's gubernatorial mansion and to the statehouse,'' Sorenson said. Kelly, a Republican, cited Maddox's efforts to visit every city in the state when he served as the Florida League of Cities president.

``He certainly made a name for himself throughout the state,'' Kelly said. ``He has the knowledge and the experience to do the job.''

Maddox announced in March that he would leave the party to run for statewide office, but didn't say at the time which office. He surprised many by earning 35 percent of the vote in a four-way primary for attorney general in 2002, just two points behind Buddy Dyer, who won the nomination but lost to Republican Charlie Crist.
