Description |
This constituency comprises the whole of the old Glasgow Pollock seat with the addition of Govan (which had been shared with the old Glasgow Govan seat), Drumoyne and Ibrox from the old Glasgow Govan seat. A number of the city's large post-war housing estates are sited in this constituency, as well as more traditional, tenement properties. Also one of the country's first-ever industrial estates was sited at Hillington - and it is still going strong. The northern part of the seat, on the banks of the Clyde, was the heart of Glasgow's shipbuilding industry, and home to a number of famous yards. Now, only one remains, the former Govan shipbuilders, which was site of a notable sit-in by the workers more than 30 years ago. Now owned by BAe, it has recently specialised in building support vessels for the Royal Navy. The constituency is also home to Glasgow Rangers Football Club's Ibrox stadium. The Pope visited the constituency 23 years ago when he held an open air mass for many thousands at Bellahouston Park.
