Info | With extensive experience in the high-technology business sector for over twenty years, Roger N. Kirkman is uniquely situated for the public arena, with a wide range of capabilities.
Roger comes from a progressive Southern family which has called Piedmont North Carolina home for over 200 years. Born and raised in Winston-Salem, Roger graduated from East Forsyth High School, and from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1973, where he later pursued graduate studies in Cartography and Population Geography. Roger was an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow at London Business School, an accelerated MBA program, during which he took honors in Marketing and Finance. He also attended Wake Forest University's National Science Foundation program in biology (1965).
In his first career as a sales engineer in electronics, Roger worked with Fortune 500 companies throughout the Southeast to design numerous products, from pagers to yachts. He later refocused his career into video systems integration, designing and building equipment and systems for industrial, government and health care clients.In the past decade, Roger has designed computer-controlled multimedia broadcast systems of various types, built video security systems, and has custom-built equipment for the telecommunications and nuclear power industry.
At present he serves as a public information officer in the Division of University Advancement at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). Roger brings to these ventures a broad experience in technical writing, accounting, marketing, map making, technical/legal translation, business management, electronic product design and multimedia.
His work experience includes executive management of a small business, as well as in public education administration. Roger serves on the board of the Di &Phi Societies Foundation, Inc., of Chapel Hill, which he twice chaired. He is also a member of the Royal Geographical Society and formerly was a North Carolina State Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Awards include inclusion in the Outstanding Young Men in America, a special Chancellor?s Award at WSSU, and has shared in two national Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Awards for excellence in annual report publication. An avid reader and traveler, Roger resides in Winston-Salem with his wife Connie.
