Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
This constituency was once a world leader in shipbuilding. It was home to Harland and Wolff shipyard where the Titanic was built. Huge redevelopment has been taking place around the Titanic quarter; its centrepieces are the Titanic centre and the Odyssey. With government buildings, engineering and the city airport within the constituency, unemployment is usually lower than in other parts of Belfast. The health of Bombardier aerospace is of vital importance to the constituency.
The estimated population of east Belfast in 2013 was 93,000 with more than 61% employed. The constituency contains Stormont, home of the Northern Ireland Assembly. The seat is predominantly Protestant, with less than 13% of residents identifying themselves as Catholic.
This seat is held by Alliance's Naomi Long, who took it from DUP leader and Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson in the most dramatic upset of the 2010 election in Northern Ireland. Mr Robinson had held the seat since 1979. |
