DescriptionBBC Profile:
Guildford had been Conservative since 1906. That changed when Liberal Democrat Sue Doughty defeated the sitting member Nick St Aubyn in 2001. She overturned a Tory majority of 5,000 to win by 538 votes.

In 2005 the seat flipped back to the Conservatives, represented by former nurse Anne Milton this time around. Her majority was even smaller, at 347.

At the election, Guildford swaps one part-ward with South West Surrey under boundary changes at the next election. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Guildford boasts an abundance of medieval architecture and the borough contains some exceptionally beautiful countryside.

London is only 30 miles to the north, and Heathrow and Gatwick are each about 40 minutes away. It has a thriving local economy and supports Surrey University, which, combined with its research park, is a key economic player and the largest employer in the seat.

It is the premier retail hub in Surrey, and is among the top five in the South East. Small- and medium-sized service companies thrive, and the town has a particularly high complement of accountants and solicitors.

More jobs are provided by the growing cluster of new technology businesses. The largest companies include Avaya, BOC Ltd, Vision Engineering, Kobe Steel and the Smith Group. Guildford is also the location for the administrative headquarters of a number of world-class companies including Colgate-Palmolive, Standard Life Healthcare, Legal & General and Cornhill Insurance.
