This was the first statewide election in North Carolina.

One of the original Electors, nominated by the General Assembly early in 1816, dropped from the ticket. Local DR leaders called a party meeting in the First Presidential Elector District to fill the vacancy on the ticket; anyone was invited. This was the first nominating convention in the history of North Carolina. Robert Love handily defeated Andrew Baird for the vacancy. In response, Baird began an anti-Caucus candidacy but remained pledged to Monroe. When the election took place, most of Baird's voters gave him a single shot and abandoned the Caucus Ticket altogether. While Baird carried the First Electoral District handily, he did not fare well in other parts of the State. He did outpoll the Federalist ticket. The Monroe total here is the sum of the regular DR ticket and the Baird vote.

Names of the Electors: 1 - Robert Love; 2 - Jesse Franklin; 3 - Peter Forney; 4 - Francis Locke; 5 - Abraham Phillips; 6 - Alexander Gray; 7 - Joseph Pickett; 8 - Thomas Ruffin; 9 - Nathaniel Jones; 10 - John Hall; 11 - Thomas Wynns; 12 - Joseph Riddick; 13 - James Hoskins; 14 - Vine Allen; 15 - Thomas D. King. This ticket received a vote in the range of 9,549 for Locke to 9,114 for Love.

The Federalist ticket also had one candidate for Elector from each electoral district. They were (1) William Porter, (2) William Lenoir, (3) Robert W. Smith, (4) Jesse A. Pearson, (5) Alexander Sneed, (6) James McNairy, (7) John Winslow, (8) Frederick Nash, (9) John Hinton, (10) Thomas Burgess, (11) Jeremiah Slade, (12) James Iredell Jr., (13) Robert Williams, (14) Durant Hatch, and (15) John D. Toomer. This ticket received a vote ranging from a high of 158 for Winslow to a low of 87 for Sneed.

Other people receiving votes for Elector included Baird with 640, William Gaston (F) with 61, and 94 other with a high of 38 votes.
