DescriptionBBC Profile:
The seat was held by Willie Ross, a member of the UUP and strong opponent of the Belfast Agreement, from 1974 until the 2001 general election when there was a 6.5% swing from the UUP to the DUP's Gregory Campbell.

In the 2005 general election Campbell increased his majority to 7,727. His lead over the UUP was over 20%.

At this election, this constituency gains Banagher and Claudy from the Derry City council area formerly in the Foyle constituency as well as continuing to cover the Limavady and Coleraine district council areas. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result above.

Despite its name, the constituency includes no part of the city of Londonderry, but is named after the county of the same name.

This mainly rural and Protestant constituency lies to the east of Londonderry in the north-western part of Northern Ireland. The main town is Coleraine, where the main campus of the University of Ulster is based. The university is an important employer and overall driver of the economy in East Londonderry. Coleraine itself is a popular shopping centre and is one of the most affluent pockets of the North West.

The constituency includes the beautiful Roe valley and the seaside resorts of Portrush and Portstewart. Both tourism and business have been boosted by the recent introduction of a ferry service between Magilligan point in the constituency and the Donegal fishing village of Greencastle, which lies on the other side of both Lough Foyle and the Irish border.

The yearly Northwest 200 motorcycle race takes place between Coleraine, Portrush and Portstewart. Portrush is also home to Royal Portrush, one of the most renowned links golf courses in Ireland and the only course outside Great Britain to host The Open (in 1951).
