Description | BBC Profile:
Created in 1950, Birmingham Hall Green was under Conservative control for 47 years until the seat was won by Labour's Stephen McCabe in 1997, with the highest swing in Birmingham.
At the election, there are four wards in this much-changed seat, a major beneficiary of the disappearance of Sparkbrook and Small Heath constituency: Hall Green, Moseley and Kings Heath, Sparkbrook, and Springfield. Moseley and Kings Heath is an entirely new arrival, taken in part from Sparkbrook and Small Heath and in part from Selly Oak. Sparkbrook is also all-new, being formed from territory from Sparkbrook and Small Heath, Selly Oak and Edgbaston. Finally, new arrival Springfield has been formed from segments previously in Selly Oak and Sparkbrook and Small Heath. Two wards were lost: Billesley and Brandwood, large wards south of the newly constituted seat, which went to Birmingham Selly Oak. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Birmingham Hall Green was a moderately well-to-do seat before the recent changes. The Hall Green ward, which borders on affluent Solihull and is retained under the new constituency configuration, has lower than average levels of deprivation for the region. However, the gain of the Sparkbrook and Small Heath wards can be expected to alter Hall Green's profile significantly. These two inner-city wards have higher unemployment and correspondingly higher levels of deprivation.
