Description | Center-left party launched by activists led by former President and Prime Minister Mário Soares living in exile during the authoritarian Second Republic. Party joined provisional governments after the chaotic Carnation Revolution (July 25, 1974) period, finding itself in a continuous battle with the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), especially after the PCP's short-lived coup begun in November 25, 1975. The PS led the countercoup, setting the PCP on a sliding scale of popularity ever since. Party was led by Portugal's 118th Prime Minister António Costa from November 22, 2014 until his resignation on January 7, 2024 following allegations of corruption. Party leadership was assumed by Assembly Deputy and 2024 prime ministerial candidate Pedro Nuno Santos [Partido Socialista (PS)]. |
