Description | The NDPA was organized in early 1968. Party members who feared a division in the party between Gov. George C. Wallace and the national party filed paperwork for the new political party in January 1968. Their initial logo showed a donkey that was too close to the symbol for the Democratic Party and was rejected (Alabama Journal, 1/25/1968). The NDPA became the state affiliate of the Democratic Party and eventually assured Hubert Humphrey a place on the ballot in Alabama. The party ran several other candidates from 1968 until 1982 but won few races. |
