| Description | Autocratic left-wing to Socialist ruling party launched by Tanzania's first president, Julius Nyerere.
Party was formed from a merger of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) and the Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP).
Party was the sole legal party of Tanzania from 1980 to 1990 and has overwhelmingly dominated Tanzania politically since then.
Party is chaired by Tanzania's President since November 5, 2015, John Magufuli.
