DescriptionAmerican troops began pulling back on Monday from positions in northeastern Syria ahead of an expected incursion by Turkey into the area, the U.S.-backed Kurdish-led forces said.

The Syrian Kurdish fighters warned that Washington’s abrupt decision to stand aside — announced by the White House late Sunday — will overturn years of achievements in the battle against the Islamic State militant group. In a strongly-worded statement, they accused Washington of failing to abide by its commitments to its key allies.

Erdogan spoke hours after the White House said U.S. forces in northeastern Syria will move aside and clear the way for an expected Turkish assault — raising concerns about the fate of Kurdish fighters who fought alongside American forces in the yearslong battle to defeat the Islamic State group.

Erdogan did not elaborate on the planned Turkish incursion but said Turkey was determined to halt what it perceives as threats from the Syrian Kurdish fighters.

We hear that this 'pull back' is calculated to avoid 'accidental' clashes between the Turks and Americans when the Turks roll into these border towns to set up their Kurd-free cordon sanitaire.

The main reason, deliberately kept sotto voce, is to create a safe space for the mass dump-transfer of millions of Syrians living in Turkey [Link] (from Istanbul especially, where the new anti-regime mayor was sent up on a 'clear-them-all-out' platform [Link]

Wow. Lots of Republicans including McConnell telling Trump this was wrong.

I'm sure that's one reason, but they aren't even hiding that the main reason is to attack the Kurds.

I sucked up to Trump for 2 and a half years for this?!?

Seriously, I wonder if this will get Graham to stop attacking the impeachment process.

Probably not. I’ve always figured Trump must have some compromising photos of Graham, because Lindsey’s defense of Trump always seems disingenous and manufactured - very forced.

But this could be enough to give some elected Republicans what they need to break with Trump. This is the type of story where the attrocities and reprucussions of the policy decision will continue to make headlines for years to come.

Graham wanted two things by making his bargain - guarantee reelection by ensuring he can't be successfully primaried from the right, and hope to be the one at the President's side advising on foreign policy rather than Rand Paul. The latter isn't working out.

Maybe "Graham's bargain" will enter the political lexicon.
