DescriptionNewt Gingrich joined the conservative opposition to the Karl Rove-backed effort to back establishment GOP candidates against more risqué contenders in primaries with an op-ed Wednesday, comparing it to famously corrupt Democratic machines of the 20th century.

“I am unalterably opposed to a bunch of billionaires financing a boss to pick candidates in 50 states,” Gingrich wrote in the conservative magazine Human Events, citing Rove by name. “This is the opposite of the Republican tradition of freedom and grassroots small town conservatism. No one person is smart enough nor do they have the moral right to buy nominations across the country. That is the system of Tammany Hall and the Chicago machine. It should be repugnant to every conservative and every Republican.”

The Rove-backed effort, called the Conservative Victory Project, is part of the Crossroads constellation of outside GOP spending groups. The goal of the group is to prevent weak candidates like Missouri Rep. Todd Akin and Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock from winning primaries and costing Republican Senate seats. Unveiled almost three weeks ago, it was met with immediate derision from the right.

A Crossroads spokesman didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
