Description | "Perry is the only county in our area without a traffic light, and one of only two in the state without the traffic control devices. A signal is now being built in Marysville and it won't cost taxpayers a dime.
It's been debated for years, but work has now begun on a Perry County stop light.
"I pull out of Route 850 every morning, and it honestly does get dangerous at times to try to make the left turn, you know," said Mikey Moulfair of Marysville.
It's no surprise that Perry County's first traffic light will be at the intersection of Routes 850 and 11/15. Traffic has been growing there for years, and making a turn from 850 onto 11/15 is almost impossible during rush hour.
"It becomes a safety issue," said PennDOT Spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler. "It's sight distance for the people pulling out from 850, and there's just the incredible volume of traffic on what is a relatively narrow road."
Rick Hoover of Marysville agreed.
"We do definitely need a red light because Perry County is growing," said Hoover. "And if you want to keep people safe, you have to take measures to keep people safe."
Taxpayers will not have to pay for the light. The developer of a new housing project nearby is footing the bill. Even nearby business owners seem happy that a traffic light is finally being installed.
We are limited in parking," said Dog Hammaker, owner of Hammaker's Garage in Marysville. "So therefore, if we get too close to the road, bus drivers are complaining that they can't see up the road. The light will really help me."
The Marysville traffic light should be up and running in early January. The only other Pennsylvania county without a traffic signal is Forest County, in northwestern Pennsylvania. |
