Description | COULD Yorkshire witness the "Portillo moment" of the next election?
Our analysis last week of the major parties' preparations for polling day revealed how the Tories have been pumping tens of thousands of pounds into key battleground seats – mostly in West Yorkshire – where the outcome of the election will be decided.
The likes of Colne Valley, Calder Valley, Dewsbury and Wakefield are all being worked intensively and hopes are high in Tory circles that they will turn blue. But one constituency that hasn't received a great deal of attention so far is the new seat of Morley and Outwood – where Gordon Brown's right-hand man Ed Balls will be standing.
The seat isn't one of the Tories' key targets and expert website UK Polling Report calculates the "notional result" if the seat had been fought in 2005 would have been a Labour majority of more than 9,000.
But Enfield Southgate was not a serious Labour target in 1997 yet a 17.1 per cent swing – almost twice the national average – produced the seminal moment of Cabinet minister Portillo being kicked out. |
