DescriptionAfter voicing adamant opposition to a Santa Barbara County split, two supervisors offered Tuesday to craft an argument detailing their position for the ballot that will go before voters in June.

The board authorized 3rd District Supervisor Brooks Firestone and 1st District Supervisor Salud Carbajal to write a 500-word ballot argument against the divorce proposal, which would form Mission County from the Santa Barbara County land north of Gaviota. Their statement would be reviewed March 7 by the rest of the board.


“I would like to make the argument against the county split. I think that's the most appropriate response,” Firestone said.

A vocal crowd of split opponents - proponents were noticeably absent - urged the board to stand united and write an argument that all five supervisors could support.

“We believe it's important that you send a message as a group,” said Mary O'Gorman, executive director of the Santa Barbara County Action Network. “Individually can just reinforce that there are differences. We agree to a united ballot argument opposed to the split.”

Second District Supervisor Susan Rose and Carbajal, both representing South Coast districts, said they agreed, and asked the board to come together and send the strongest opposition message possible for voters.

“I believe in our hearts that we know it's the best thing for all of us,” Rose said. “I do believe we should take this action unanimously. It's important as leaders that we send this message.” ...
