DescriptionUndaunted by speculation within his own party that he may have to quit Congress because of a corruption probe, Republican Bob Ney announced Wednesday he's running for re-election.

"2006 promises to be a vigorous campaign, and I am ready for the fight," said Ney, a resident of Heath in Licking County. He planned to hold his first formal campaign event today.

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Carl Forti said Wednesday that even if Ney is indicted - and Ohio Republican Party chairman Bob Bennett calls for him to relinquish his office - the national party plans to back him.

"Any incumbent running for re-election that needs our support will get it," Forti said, adding that an indictment does not mean someone is guilty.

"Ney has maintained his innocence, that he was duped," Forti said. "If Bob Ney is running for re-election, he'll have our full support."
