Rauschenberger Confirms Run For Illinois Lt. Governor

| Description | Trailing badly in the polls, two candidates for the Republican nomination for governor announced Wednesday they are joining forces.
Steve Rauschenberger, a conservative state senator from Elgin, dropped out of the governor's race. Instead, he will seek the lieutenant governor's nomination as the running mate of Chicago businessman Ron Gidwitz, a moderate.
They offered themselves as a reform-minded alternative to the front-runner, state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, who faces strong opposition from conservatives who view her as too liberal and not committed to cleaning up state government.
"I am excited about this team," Rauschenberger said at a news conference. "While it may be an initial surprise to some, it challenges the imagination of Republican primary voters and it breaks down the stereotype about all-or-nothing, self-absorbed politicians," Rauschenberger said.
Although the duo called themselves running mates, primary voters cast separate ballots for governor and lieutenant governor. Rauschenberger promised to step aside if he wins the lieutenant governor's race but Gidwitz loses the battle for the Republican gubernatorial nomination |
