Description | Governor - The Democrat says he's told Gov. Ted Kulongoski he's thinking hard about the statehouse

HARRY ESTEVE
SALEM -- Former Gov. John Kitzhaber moved one step closer to a comeback bid Friday, saying he is seriously considering a run for an unprecedented third term as Oregon governor.
Kitzhaber said he told current Gov. Ted Kulongoski he may enter the Democratic primary and will make a final decision shortly after the first of the year.
"I called the governor yesterday (Thursday) just to let him know that I intended to take a hard look at whether or not I want to get involved in the race," Kitzhaber said in a phone interview from Florida, where he was attending a health policy meeting.
A Kitzhaber candidacy would upend the Democratic gubernatorial race -- considered till now a near shoo-in for Kulongoski. Polls have shown Kulongoski well ahead of other potential challengers, such as state Sen. Vicki Walker, D-Eugene, and Lane County Commissioner Pete Sorenson.
But a recent poll by Riley Research Associates of Portland showed Kulongoski and Kitzhaber in a virtual tie among likely Democratic voters.
"The impact Kitzhaber has just talking about running is immense," said James Moore, a political analyst and professor at Pacific University. "It makes it very clear that people are hungry for someone other than Kulongoski to run, but that person has to be a major player." |
