DescriptionThe indictment of Vice President Cheney's top aide and continued investigation of President Bush's chief political adviser in the CIA leak case walloped a weakened Bush administration Friday.

These dramatic developments came as Bush was struggling on several political fronts. They also put squarely back in the public spotlight the controversy over Bush's reasons for invading Iraq to oust Saddam Hussein, with possible advantages for Democrats.

For the White House, it is trouble piled trouble onto uncertainty--the nightmarish result of the simple leak of a CIA operative's name two years ago by figures in the administration.

It certainly could have been worse for a White House already under fire for other missteps. But it was still a major blow that Lewis "Scooter" Libby, chief of state to the vice president, was indicted on charges of obstruction of justice, perjury before the grand jury and making false statements to FBI agents.

Bush's political guru, deputy chief of staff Karl Rove, escaped indictment, but the fact that he remains under investigation by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald adds a strong note of uncertainty as to his future.
