Description | Much of the land on which this seat lies was reclaimed from the marshes and consists of rich, alluvial soil, making it ideal for farming. Cereal, root and market garden crops are all cultivated here, and agriculture remains the region's main industry. It is however a more mixed seat than just Lincolnshire farmland, including large numbers of urban voters because it takes in parts of the Lincoln city commuter lands, many villages and Sleaford town itself. Sleaford has held a market since earliest recorded times. Its attractive stone-built houses are typical of those found in small villages sprinkled all over the seat, such as Heckington, the home of the only eight-sailed windmill in the country. Labour has a history of making gains here on a local level, but then losing out in parliamentary contests. Part of the reason for this is the often high number of independently-represented wards, which tend to vote Conservative during general elections. In parliamentary terms though, the Conservative have considered it their safe ground. Douglas Hogg, who represented Grantham until the creation of this new seat in 1997, upped his vote share to within a sliver of an absolute majority in 2001, even as Conservatives across the country were suffering a disastrous night.
