DescriptionNorthampton is a manufacturing town close to the M1, with a population growing at a rate of about 2,000 a year. In 1974, the town was divided into two parliamentary constituencies, with this southern division being the safer for the Conservatives. It is outside of the town itself and takes in the rural and commuter hinterland to the south, including a good deal of green belt land. There are a number of small villages such as Kislingbury and Collingtree which offer very pleasant residences to the more affluent workers in Northampton and Milton Keynes. Traditionally, the town's prime industry has been shoemaking, but there is now a much more diverse range of business interests there - Carlsberg has its UK base there, Barclaycard's headquarters are there and MFI has a big distribution centre there too. Perhaps the most famous former MP for this town was Spencer Perceval - elected in 1796 he was the only MP for Northampton to have been prime minister. He was also the only British prime minister to be assassinated - in 1812 by an angry farmer. The town also elected the first female minister - Margaret Bondfield, who was appointed minister of Labour in 1929. The rural hinterland and large number of owner occupiers should make this prime Tory ground but here as across Northamptonshire, a Labour MP Tony Clarke narrowly won the seat in 1997 and managed to cling on in 2001, increasing his majority to 885 votes.
