Description | This seat was expected by some in 2001 to be a significant battleground, since the incumbent Labour MP defending his record was the controversial Keith Vaz. He resigned on health grounds after various allegations were made about the state of his financial affairs. As a backbencher he was also suspended from the Commons for a month after he was found to have deliberately obstructed an inquiry by the Standards Commissioner. However, Leicester East returned Mr Vaz to Westminster in 2001 with an extremely healthy 33.1% majority after his vote share dropped just 8%. The seat has high unemployment and is predominantly working class. It also has the second highest proportion of Asians in its population of any seat in the country. Mr Vaz, who was first elected in 1987, was the first Asian to be elected an MP since the 1920s.
