Description | Derby South, unlike its counterpart in the north of the city, has become an increasingly safe Labour seat over the course of the last 20 years. Incumbent MP Margaret Beckett who is also Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, first won the seat in 1983 by a slender 421 majority. But she has built up her vote and Labour's majority to a peak of over 16,000 in 1997. It now stands at 13,855. South is Derby's industrial heartland, as well as the focus for its 16% Indian-Asian community and the location for most of its 14% of council housing. The main employers are the Rolls Royce Aerospace factory and the railway works, which are important as nearly a quarter of the constituents still work in manufacturing. Derby South also has rather a special place in the annals of Labour history - it was one of only two seats won by the Labour Representation Committee, the forerunner of the Labour Party in its first election in 1900.
