| Description | When veteran Labour MP Tony Benn, who had represented Chesterfield since a 1984 by-election, stood down in 2001, he apparently bequeathed to his successor Reg Race a majority of 5,775. But the seat fell to the Liberal Democrats - one of few to change hands in 2001. Now Paul Holmes MP holds it with a majority of 2,500. Chesterfield is Derbyshire's second largest town which is characterised by the local landmark - the crooked spire of St Mary and All Saints Parish Church, caused by the warping of its lead and wooden frame. The proximity of the town to Sheffield is pointed up by its many steel working factories, including the enormous steel and chemical complex at Stavely. This is an overwhelmingly white (98%) constituency with two-thirds owner-occupation and 23% council house renting.
