| Description | Overview
The Mississippi Senate is the upper house of the Mississippi Legislature,
the state legislature of the state of Mississippi. The Senate is composed
of 52 Senators representing an equal amount of constituent districts, with
54,704 people per district (2000 figures).
Like other upper houses of state and territorial legislatures and the federal
U.S. Senate, the Senate can confirm or reject gubernatorial appointments
to the state cabinet, commissions and boards.
Officers
The president and presiding officer of the Senate is the Lieutenant Governor;
the second in command is the president pro tempore. Unlike other upper
houses in state legislatures, the President Pro Tempore's power is limited.
The other Senate majority and minority leaders are elected by their respective
party caucuses.
Terms and Sessions
Senators and Representatives are elected for four-year terms and may be
elected to successive terms. Legislators are administered the oath of office
by the Secretary of State on the first day of the regular session of the year
following election. The Constitution requires the Legislature to convene yearly
on the Tuesday after the first Monday in January.
The upcoming term of the legislature will begin on Tuesday, January 8, 2008
and end on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. |
