Description | This ethnically diverse Metro Toronto riding runs from Highway 401 in the south to Steeles Avenue East in the north, between Victoria Park Avenue in the west and Midland Avenue, Finch Avenue East and Brimley Road in the east.
According to the 2001 census, the immigrant population is over 63 per cent, the second highest in Canada. The riding has significant numbers of Tamils, Sri Lankans, Italians, Greeks and Chinese. More than 35 per cent are Chinese, the fourth highest percentage in Canada. Only 36 per cent listed English as their mother tongue.
Small business and light industry form the basis of most economic activity in the riding. Average family income is $60,742 and unemployment is 8.4 per cent.
In 2004 the eastern boundary moved further east, from the CN tracks to Midland Avenue and Brimley Road. The riding was created in 1986 from 42 per cent of York-Scarborough. There was no change in 1996. |
