DescriptionThe Prime Minister is appointed by the president to serve a four-year term and exercises executive power along with a Council of Ministers he/she selects subject to parliamentary support.

A position equivalent to prime minister was created on December 21, 1917 and called the 'Chairman of the General Directory' when Moldova was known as the independent 'Moldovan Democratic Republic' until it was extinguished by the Bolsheviks on January 10, 1918.

The territory was seized by the Kingdom of Romania on January 24, 1918 and incorporated into Romania as the Union of Bessarabia with the Kingdom of Romania.

After 67 years as a Soviet Socialist Republic, Moldova declared independence on August 27, 1991. Moldova's first prime minister took office on May 28, 1991.
