Description | Republic of Turkey
Turkiye Cumhuriyeti
Turkey is located in southwestern Asia. A portion of Turkey west of the Bosporus is geographically part of Europe. With its capital in Ankara, Turkey is comprised of 81 provinces. Its people are 99.8% Muslim with small communities of Christians and Jews. Its people speak Turkish, Kurdish, Arabic, Armenian, Greek and English.
Turkey was created as a successor state to the Ottoman Empire, which had fallen in the mid-1920s. Ataturk, the Father of Modern Turkey, established a unique Islamic oriented state that was largely secular. Ataturk believed in a Westernized future for Turkey and that meant abolishing government by religious fiat. In 1945 Turkey joined the United Nations and in 1952 it became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
A republican parliamentary democracy, Turkey is led by the President who serves as Head of State. Governance is at the hands of the Prime Minister and his cabinet. Legislation is the jurisdiction of the unicameral Grand National Assembly of Turkey or Turkiye Buyuk Millet Meclisi. |
