Description | The Union of Burma
Myanmar
Burma (Myanmar) is a southeastern Asian country bordering the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, between Bangladesh and Thailand. Slightly smaller than the State of Texas, Burma is governed by a military regime in the capital city of Rangoon (Yangon).
Burma is a former British colony which declared its independence from the Crown on January 4, 1948. It later became the Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma, headed by a communist government. On January 3, 1974, Burma experimented with democracy with a draft constitution. The constitutional government was toppled by a military committee on September 18, 1988. Military rule continues today.
Since 1989, the military authorities in Burma have promoted the name Myanmar as a conventional name for their state; this decision was not approved by any sitting legislature in Burma and the United States Government did not adopt the name, which is a derivative of the Burmese short-form name Myanma Naingngandaw. |
