The Japanese Empire consists of an Asian-Pacific Rim archipelago between the Sea of Japan and the North Pacific Ocean, east of the Korean peninsula. Slightly smaller than the State of California, Japan is divided into smaller states called prefectures. There are 47 prefectures: Aichi, Akita, Aomori, Chiba, Ehime, Fukui, Fukuoka, Fukushima, Gifu, Gumma, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, Hyogo, Ibaraki, Ishikawa, Iwate, Kagawa, Kagoshima, Kanagawa, Kochi, Kumamoto, Kyoto, Mie, Miyagi, Miyazaki, Nagano, Nagasaki, Nara, Niigata, Oita, Okayama, Okinawa, Osaka, Saga, Saitama, Shiga, Shimane, Shizuoka, Tochigi, Tokushima, Tokyo, Tottori, Toyama, Wakayama, Yamagata, Yamaguchi, Yamanashi.
Japan was founded circa 660BC by the Emperor Jimmu. The Shogunate was established on August 21, 1194. It maintains a constitutional monarchy to this day with a democratic parliamentary government, seated in the capital of Tokyo. After World War II, under the leadership of Supreme Allied Commander, General Douglas MacArthur, Japan's current system of governance was created.
The Heads of State are the Emperor and Empress of Japan. The Head of Government is the Prime Minister, elected from the Kokkai or Diet. The Supreme Court is appointed ceremonially by the Emperor with the advice of the Prime Minister's Cabinet.
