Description | A London seat since the 1960s, parts of Wimbledon still have the feel of its Surrey heritage. To the north of the constituency lies the 1,000 acre common with Wimbledon Village skirting it - this is the strongest area for the Conservatives. Sweeping down Wimbledon Hill, the wards become more marginal before ending up in strong Labour territory in the south on the borders with Mitcham and Morden. Wimbledon is of course best known for its world-famous tennis championships at the end of June. It is also the headquarters of two large trades unions, the GMB and CWU. The area's association with Horatio Nelson who lived here for some time is reflected in the name of the local hospital, the Emma Hamilton pub and various street names. The seat also has two theatres. Public transport links are excellent through the Tube and overground and many residents commute to central London. Local employment is largely in the service sector. It has the second highest ranked number of higher professionals in England and the third highest overall managerial and professional jobs - almost 50%. There is 80% owner-occupation and only 5.5% rent from the local authority. Labour has won here only once before in 1945. The London Borough of Merton was one of the party's growth areas in the 1990s but the 1997 General Election result still came as a surprise. Labour's Roger Casale overturned a 14,761 majority to win by 2,990. He held on, too, with an increased majority of 3,744 in 2001.
