Description: Both Lewisham East and adjacent Lewisham West have been marginal seats, moving together between Conservative and Labour in 1983 and 1992. Between those two dates East was represented in Parliament by Colin Moynihan, Conservative minister for sport. It is currently represented by Labour's Bridget Prentice, with a majority of 9,000 - just under 30%. She is currently a government whip, and was formerly married to Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice. This is a socially mixed constituency, ranging from council estates in Downham and Grove Park to the south - to Blackheath Village and part of the ancient Heath to the north. Blackheath featured in the 1381 Peasants' Revolt and in 1415 when London's citizens welcomed Henry V on his return from battle at Agincourt. At 76%, East has the highest percentage of white people of the three Lewisham constituencies. Unemployment is above average. Among employed people, this has the highest rate of commuters travelling by train in the entire country (32%). Fifty-five per cent of housing stock is privately owned and a quarter council rented. In local political terms, Labour has control of Lewisham Council, with its directly-elected mayor.
