Description | Ilford is divided into two ' north and south - for general election purposes. In 1992 the split was political as well as geographical. Then Labour's Mike Gapes took south from Neil Thorne who had been the Tory incumbent there since 1979. However, extensive boundary changes in 1995 meant that the seat was nominally Conservative. But Mr Gapes held on with a majority of 14,200. In 2001 he actually increased his vote share to nearly 60%. The constituency has a 55% non-white population (as opposed to 75% in north), 35% of whom are from the Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities who tend to be loyal to Labour. However, Muslim voters could switch because of the Iraq war. This half of Ilford contains all of the town centre, and though there are marginally more owner-occupiers here, the standard of housing is poor. Service and light industries are found in the seat, which has more manual workers that Ilford North, as well as two per cent higher unemployment. Mr Gapes was formerly a research officer with the Labour Party, specialising in foreign affairs. He had two short spells in the junior ranks of government in both the 1997 and 2001 Parliaments but is currently on the backbenches.
