Description | This is a suburban area of south-east London. Bexleyheath and Crayford lies on the south bank of the Thames between Dartford to the east and Greenwich to the west. The A2, the main trunk road between London and Dover, forms the southern boundary. The constituency borders Kent and, in the past, Gypsies from Kent and surrounding areas have regularly congregated on Crayford marshes. The former MP for the area, the late Norman Dodds, was dubbed "the Gypsies' MP" for championing their interests. Following boundary changes in 1995, the Crayford section of the former Erith and Crayford constituency was added to Bexleyheath. Erith and Crayford had been a marginal Conservative seat, whilst Bexleyheath was safe for the party. After the merger there was a battle between the two sitting MPs, David Evenett and Cyril Townsend, for the nomination. Evenett won, but rather surprisingly lost the Election to Labour's Nigel Beard on a swing of 15%. The margin was closer in 2001 but Beard just held on by 1,472 votes. The population here is 93.7% white. Unemployment is lower than the national average and there is 80% owner-occupation: this constituency boasts the second highest number of semi-detached houses in the land. Except in Crayford there is little industry and a large number of workers commute.
