Description | The local council described this area as "once a vast tract of fever-infested swamps", but extensive land reclamation from the 16th Century onwards has led to the region, with its hugely fertile alluvial soil, becoming one of the prime areas of crop production in the UK. Dutch engineers and scientists had their part to play in the reclamation schemes. Another similarity with the Netherlands is the cultivation of tulips, particularly around Spalding, as well as many other types of bulb and root vegetables. Spalding, once an inland port, is an old market town on the river Welland whose almost solely white, owner-occupying residents are typical of those living throughout the seat. Other towns include Crowland, famous for its ruined, but still magnificent, abbey and a 14th Century triangular bridge, and Northborough, the final resting place of Cromwell's wife, Elizabeth. Following the boundary review of 1995, the seat was formed by pulling together voters from the old Stamford and Spalding seat, with a chunk from the former Holland with Boston constituency. The Holland part of this seat's name comes from a large rural district in this constituency, so-named because of its striking likeness to that flat, low-land country across the North Sea. Deepings is derived from Market Deeping, West Deeping and Deeping St Nicholas; a small town and two villages which are all situated within the seat. Consisting almost entirely of small villages and market towns, this is prime Conservative territory - John Hayes MP scored a healthy 24% majority in 2001.
