DescriptionRushcliffe is the site of Nottingham Forest Football Club and present MP, former Home Secretary and Chancellor, Kenneth Clarke, is one of their biggest fans. The seat is predominantly rural and covers the south of the county of Nottinghamshire south of the river Trent. West Bridgford, a prosperous Nottingham suburb, is the main settlement. Otherwise there are a number of villages and small towns such as Bingham, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Keyworth, East Leake and Ruddington. Adjoining the football club is the international cricket ground at Trent Bridge. Unemployment is below the national average. There is a large proportion of managerial and professional workers (38.7%) and nearly 47% of household spaces are detached. This is one of the least deprived areas of the country. Labour did win a constituency called Rushcliffe once - in 1966 - but it was much more like the existing Broxtowe seat than its namesake. Ken Clarke won it back in 1970 and, following radical boundary changes, began to accumulate big majorities - more than 20,000 in both of the 80s' elections. The low point for him was in 1997 when his margin was only 5,000, rising again to 7,357 four years later. In 2003 the government proposed the opening of an asylum detention centre at RAF Newton in the constituency. Ken Clarke was instrumental in campaigning against it. In July 2004, John Prescott announced that the proposal would not go ahead.
