| Description | Nottingham East has had a somewhat volatile electoral history. Between 1930 and 1955 it was held by each of the three main parties but was then abolished. It was reinstated during the 1970s when Labour won but boundary changes helped it become Tory in 1983. Four years later Labour lost again - by 456 votes. Since 1992, though, it has been held by Labour. The constituency varies from the affluent wards of Mapperley and Sherwood to the inexpensive terraced housing of Radford and Forest. Most of the 22% council housing is in Manvers and Sherwood. It is the most ethnically mixed of the three Nottingham seats. Many workers are in manual trades and many travel outside the constituency to work. John Heppell, who himself was a fitter and railway worker before entering Parliament, had a 34% majority in 2001.
