DescriptionThe constituency is based on the declining Leicestershire coalfield around Coalville, which was transferred to this new seat from Bosworth in 1983 and is the largest town. The division includes the second largest town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Castle Donington, site of the East Midlands airport. With its dual urban/rural nature and a population, which is a decent split between working and middle class voters, this is something of a classic battleground seat. Despite being based on an old mining community, this seat was held by the Conservative David Ashby from 1983 to 1997. It was then taken by Labour's David Taylor, its current incumbent. The Tories' victories here in the 1980s were handsome, with a majority of almost 8,000 in 1987, but after Labour deemed it a key target seat it fell on a huge swing in 1997. Labour also continues to dominate the council.
