Description | Riding profile
The riding is a new one, merging two former districts (Matane and Matapédia) in Quebec's Lower Saint Lawrence region on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River east of Rimouski. The riding touches the river on its north edge and the border with Brunswick along its southwest flank.
Political history
There was majority (60-plus per cent) support for sovereignty in each of the predecessor ridings of Matane and Matapédia, but election results were fairly mixed. Matane has gone back and forth between the Liberals and PQ since the mid-1980s, while Matapédia voted for a Liberal for two terms in 1985 and 1989 before handing the seat to the PQ's Danielle Doyer five times straight. |
